7th Pay Commission: Good news for these 26 lakh government employees coming by June 30

7th Pay Commission: As central government employees wait for the implementation of a salary hike beyond the report recommendations, a big section of them has finally received some good news. Going by the latest reports, Uttar Pradesh government has decided to pay arrears to its employees and pensioners.

As many as 26 lakh government employees, teachers and pensioners are awaiting arrears beginning January 2016 under 7th pay commission recommendations. They may soon receive 50 per cent of arrears by June 30, said a Jansatta report. Sachiv Alaknanda Dayal had issued orders in this regard in consultation with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The state government is yet to pay arrears for the period between January 2016 and December 2016. The UP government will pay the 50 per cent arrears by June 30 in financial year 2018-19 and another 50 per cent in financial year 2019-20.

Meanwhile, those who have not yet received any hike are getting restive over their demands for salary hike not being met and they even went on a strike to register their protest. One of the categories of these less fortunate government employees are postal employees known as gramin dak sevaks (GDS). After their demands for hike in pay went unheeded, some 1000 staff members of the postal department in Coimbatore district boycotted work, according to a Times Of India report over the non-implementation of the 7th pay commission recommendations.

Since they are extra departmental employees, in practical terms they are not direct employees of the postal department and thus not eligible for pay hikes. Their job is to make deliveries in rural areas. Although 7th pay commission report recommendations are being implemented for regular postal department’s employees from as far back 2016, gramin dak sevaks are getting nothing.

Other government employees who are dissatisfied are the central ones. They are looking for another hike in pay, this time by a fitment factor of 3.68 times rather than the current 2.57 times. While promises have been made to them at the highest level by the relevant authorities, no progress has been made as yet on the issue.
