Apple is widely expected to release a comprehensively updates iPhone this year in order to commemorate the revolutionary smartphone’s tenth anniversary. The iPhone 8 is arguably the most hotly anticipated device of 2017 and has seen an unprecedented amount of leaks and rumours circulating around the net. Now a new report has confirmed that the new iPhone will be waterproof and come with wireless charging support built in.
According to a new report by Nikkei Asian review, iPhone supplier Wistron has confirmed that the iPhone 8 (or at-least one of the three iPhones expected this year) will be waterproof and feature wireless charging. Wireless charging has been a feature that has been present in competing smartphones from Samsung for quite some time now and has been strongly rumoured to be features in the iPhone 8.
Wistron CEO Robert Hwang said – “Assembly process for the previous generations of [iPhones] have not changed much. Though new features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing, and waterproof function will alter the assembly process a bit”.
Now there is some confusion in these statements as to which iPhone Wistron is referring to in these statements. Apple is expected to release three iPhones this year – the tenth anniversary iPhone 8 and updates to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in the form of the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus.
Some reports claim that Wistron has been tasked to assemble the iPhone 7s Plus this year and not the iPhone 8.If these statements pertain to the iPhone 7s Plus and it comes with waterproofing and wireless charging, then it is quite obvious to assume that the higher end iPhone 8 will not skimp out on those features.
What kind of wireless charging Apple will introduce is an open question. While a Samsung-like version of wireless charging might be on the cards, some rumours point towards a more radical approach. Certain rumours point towards Apple introducing ‘true’ wireless charging with the iPhone 8. Unlike the Qi wireless standard that is used by Samsung which involves placing the device on a specific charging pad, Apple’s version will reportedly allows the device to be charged ‘truly’ wirelessly, from a distance of up to 15 feet.
Alongside waterproofing and wireless charging, the iPhone is expected to come with a edge-to-edge TrueTone OLED display, a new bezel-less glass and metal design which looks a lot like the original iPhone, a Smart Connector for accessories such as VR headsets and an updated 3D touch module.
